Whitenosed |
Well, we are back in Greenland, and the year is 2001. It's summer and I have put foot in Greenland, maybe for the last time. The NGRIP project is coming to an end. The project lacks about 80m to be drilled. My father is ill, and something tells me that he will not get better. The tradition of getting Whitenosed, comes from getting BLUENOSED. When you get BLUENOSED, it's normal the first time you are in Greenland, and the Whitenose is the last time you plan to be in Greenland. The story is the same, and you drink, and get drunk. But for you, things are not as happy, and a lot of memories comes to you. All people in Ravens Roost, comes over and greet you. Now I have a lot of memories of 109th Airlift Group and Greenland, and that is what is important. |

GETTING BLUENOSED IN GREENLAND'S ROOST |
The Ravens Roost |
In the summer of 1997, I was in Greenland for the fifth time. But this time I WAS BLUENOSED. As you properly have read, I have been doing work in Greenland for some time. But this year I was invited to an party at The Ravens Roost. I had a lot to do that day so I came a hour later then the rest of the guinea-pigs. That was a BIG mistake. When I arrived, some rather drunk people, with some blue paintings in their faces, where having fun, and the rest of the 109th were sitting having fun. So I went up to Thomas "Tom" S. Grugan, an asked what was what. Then I was informed, that since I did not attend to that normal times, I would get a special "Bluenose". I did not know what I should do, I was seated on a bar chair, and a big glass was placed in front of me. Then I realized what should happened: I should drink the jar, which was filled with mixed liquor. Then my face would be painted blue, but my "Supreme Exalted Protentate of the Atric Region". (Tom) After that I should go with the rest of the unite, to the local club "Klubben". At "Klubben" I would have more fun, and get more drunk. The last thing I should do......stay up for a very long time, and get the full effect of the alcohol. When the list, was finished, and I had a hangover, I got a certificate. Now I am a Knight of the Blue Nose. I am not able to remember much from that evening.

This is a story by Fred Reed. He was also BLUENOSED, but he came on time, and got the original thing. |

The 109th have their own bar in Sondy, for members only, that means, 109th Airlift Crew, and special invited guests.
The Raven calls | |
The Raven gives vital information, and announcements. Then the phone calls, everybody have to be silent! The Raven tells for instance, that a person has a birthday, or that some one is going to go get their blue/Whitenose.

The Raven has commanded a toast
And when The Raven says DRINK, YOU DRINK!

This is how a real bartender looks like, he is also an aviation engineer. He was able to patch a plane together with, two empty beer bottles, and some duct tape.

109th Airlift Group |
Well since my father started to fly in Greenland, he has used the 109th Airlift Group. |
They practice flying and landing in Greenland, based in Sondy, Kangerlussuaq, in the summer. And in the winter they fly on the |
Antarctic, supplying the American operations. Below I have some pictures. |
